What can go wrong with online education ? Forums

Of course things can go wrong with online education, like with everything under the stars. But all things considered, I am a big fan of online education.

Education needs a radical overhaul, and students need affordable quality education. Affordable means not only cheap, but also practical and convenient. Having to move to the other side of the country, or the world, often makes quality education unaffordable in practice.

I remember shaking my head and laughing a few years ago at a Singularity Summit, when some idiot said that the smartest people in the world were all in the conference hall. Given the demographic data, I guess the smartest people in the world are in the middle of nowhere, poor, need to work 14 hours a day to eat something, and have with no realistic chance to realize their potential. Online education will permit them to emerge.

Re "people still need social contact, mentoring, and face to face learning." This is true, but I think as online education platform become more and more rich and immersive, with social networks, mobile access, multi-way video conferencing, shared documents, virtual reality meeting areas, innovative educators will be able to replicate online more and more of the benefits of face to face interaction.
