Google Launches New Ad Formats To Help Developers Monetize Google Maps

Google Maps ad unit largeAs Google Maps continues to face headwind from competitors like OpenStreetMap, Google has to find new ways to entice developers to continue to use its mapping solution. Today, the company is launching new ad units for Google Maps that bring Google's standard AdSense link units to its maps on third-party sites. These new ad formats join Google's long-established Maps Ad Unit, which the company introduced back in 2009.

Castravalva announce new album details and Southampton Joiners ...

The term ?unique? is often thrown around, but in 2010 when?Castrovalva?s?eagerly awaited d?but album ?We are A Unit? was unleashed on an unsuspecting world they really did intrigue, confuse, excite and at times disturb listeners. Love them or hate them?Castrovalva have?got people talking and they?ll be visiting Southampton Joiners in October.

Their huge and harsh bass driven-rock sound coupled with pop overtones, a hip-hop inspired album concept and one of the highest pitched voices in the UK rock scene had writers reaching out all over the place to try and find suitable comparisons. Acts such as Hella, Death from Above 1979, Lightning Bolt, N.W.A, Notorious B.I.G and even Prince were all mentioned in reviews with the likes of NME, Artrocker, Rock A Rolla, Rock Sound and Drowned in Sound all heaping praise on the album.

Since then?Castrovalva?have kept their musical cards very close to their chest leaving many wondering what direction they?d take next. There were brief glimpses in 2011 when new tracks featured on a split 10? between Dance to the Radio and Brew alongside Hawk Eyes, Blacklisters and Dolphins and further split with Kong, Shield Your Eyes and That Fucking Tank.

The band ended the year playing the BBC Introducing Stage at Leeds & Reading Festival where BBC Rock Show?s Daniel P Carter tipped them as one of 5 bands to watch alongside Deftones, Bring Me The Horizon, Jimmy Eat World and Weezer.

Now at this point in 2012?Castrovalva?are back with their new album??You?re not in Hell, You?re in Purgatory My Friend??set for release through Leeds label?Brew?(Nine Black Alps, Kong, Blacklisters, Humanfly) on 1st?October. As with everything associated with this band the only thing you can ever expect is the unexpected.

This time the flirtations with hip-hop are gone and replaced with ideas and themes focused on things closer to home where the subjects of friends, family, fatherhood and broken relationships are all explored. But while lyrically at times this may be a far more serious record the fun and excitement is still very much there with blaring synths very much at the forefront alongside those crushing but addictive bass-lines.

All this becomes ever so apparent when you listen to the double AA singles??Se?orita??and ?I am the Golden Widow??(released digitally on 16th?September). Over just two tracks?Castrovalva?clock up a record number of influences jumping between rock, dance, noise, metal and even Motown for a brief moment.

In the past they have shared the stage with the likes of Health, Adebisi Shank, An Albatross, Pulled Apart By Horses, Tek One, &U&I and Melt Banana to name a few. Now in October they will hit the road as main support with label mates Nine Black Alps where they will no doubt confuse and delight people in equal measure.

Isaac menaces U.S. Gulf Coast 7 years after Katrina

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Isaac closed in on the U.S. Gulf coast on Monday, triggering evacuation orders in some areas and disrupting offshore oil production as it threatened to make landfall between Florida and Louisiana as a Category 2 hurricane.

The wide, slow-moving storm swiped south Florida on Sunday and strengthened over the warm Gulf waters. It was expected to reach land late on Tuesday or early Wednesday, the anniversary of devastating Hurricane Katrina seven years ago.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center warned the storm could buffet towns and cities in at least three U.S. states near the shoreline and flood the northern Gulf coast with a storm surge of up to 12 feet in some areas.

"The weather will start going downhill overnight tonight on the northern Gulf Coast," Hurricane Center Director Rick Knabb told reporters. "Wherever it is people are going to be during the storm, they need to get there tonight."

Isaac was forecast to strengthen into a Category 2 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of hurricane intensity, with top winds of 100 mph, before making landfall and moving over the Gulf Coast.

The storm could take direct aim at New Orleans, which is still struggling to fully recover from Katrina, which swept across the city on August 29, 2005, killing more than 1,800 people and causing billions of dollars of damage along the coast.

"That brings a high level of anxiety to the people of New Orleans," said New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu. "I want to tell everybody now that I believe that we will be OK."

At 8 p.m. EDT (2400 GMT), Isaac was centered 230 miles southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River with top sustained winds of 70 miles per hour -- a speed that places the storm very near hurricane status -- and swirling northwest at 10 mph.

The storm was more than 400 miles wide and Craig Fugate, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said the worst effects may well be in Mississippi and Alabama.

"This is not a New Orleans storm. This is a Gulf Coast storm," Fugate said.

The governors of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama declared states of emergency and mandatory evacuation orders went into effect for residents of several low-lying districts, including about 8,000 to 10,000 residents of Mobile, Alabama, as well as nearby Dauphin Island.

President Barack Obama approved Louisiana's request for a federal disaster declaration, Governor Bobby Jindal said. Obama's approval, given in a phone call that included the governors of Mississippi, Alabama, makes federal funds available for disaster recovery activities like clearing debris.

Energy producers in the Gulf of Mexico shut down some of their operations ahead of what could be the biggest test for U.S. energy installations since 2008, when Hurricanes Gustav and Ike disrupted offshore oil output for months and damaged onshore natural gas processing plants, pipelines and some refineries.

The ports of Mobile and New Orleans were closed and barge traffic was suspended along southern portions of the Mississippi River.

In New Orleans, which is below sea level, long lines formed at some gas stations. Skies over the city were gray and a stiff breeze signaled the approaching storm. Along Canal Street in the city's historic French Quarter, crews were boarding up storefront windows.

Charles Neeley, a 69-year-old contractor overseeing a group of workers covering the windows of a drugstore, said he was undeterred by the storm.

"We usually ride out ones and twos and get the hell out for threes and fours," he said, referring to the categories of hurricane strength.

In Gulfport, Mississippi, as in many other coastal towns, people crowded supermarkets to buy bottled water and canned food.

"Traffic is crazy," said Debbie Fish, who lives in Biloxi, Mississippi. "It seems like everybody is out running around."

"HOPE FOR THE BEST"

A bumper-to-bumper stream of vehicles left New Orleans on the I-10 highway heading west toward Baton Rouge as motorists made their way to higher ground.

At Mandina's Restaurant, a popular New Orleans eatery flooded by eight feet of water during Katrina, fourth-generation owner Cindy Mandina said she was nervous.

"We're going to hold tight and hope for the best," Mandina said, as she prepared to close up before the storm. "Pre-Katrina, you'd never close, you'd stay open, maybe lose power and then reopen as soon as possible."

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, equipped with dozens of bulldozers, piled tons of sand to reinforce the New Orleans levee system as Isaac lurked in the Gulf.

Emergency workers hope the levees, a series of massive walls which surround low-lying areas of the city, will hold up against the storm surge and avert life-threatening flooding.

Colonel Edward Fleming, commander of the Army Corps of Engineers overseeing flood protection, said improvements to the levee system had made New Orleans far less vulnerable to flooding than it was seven years ago.

But in low-lying Plaquemines Parish, which could be the first to be lashed by Isaac's winds and storm surge, workers scrambled to stack sandbags and reinforce levees.

Much of the parish lies outside the greater New Orleans levee system, and construction projects to bolster protection are not yet complete.

"We're really worried about the storm surge, we really need a few more years before we see an event like this," said Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser.

Despite the threat to the U.S. offshore oil patch, which produces about 23 percent of the country's oil output and 7 percent of its natural gas, prices for international benchmark Brent crude traded down $1.24 to $112.35 a barrel in late Monday activity.

Meteorologists at Weather Insight, an arm of Thomson Reuters, estimated that the storm temporarily shut down 88 percent of U.S. offshore oil production capacity and 80 percent of the offshore natural gas output.

Once ashore, the storm could wreak havoc on low-lying fuel refineries along the Gulf Coast that account for about 40 percent of U.S. refining capacity.

That could send gasoline prices spiking just before the U.S. Labor Day holiday on September 3, analysts said.

Isaac killed at least 22 people and caused significant flooding and damage in Haiti and the Dominican Republic before skirting the southern tip of Florida on Sunday.

(AP) ? After nightfall on Friday, as red lights began glowing atop the massive Amuay refinery in western Venezuela, the odor of sulfur made its way through the surrounding neighborhood of working-class homes and small shops.

Francisco Gonzalez, a stocky accountant with dark hair, noticed the smell after 7 p.m. as he climbed the stairs to his second-story apartment across the street from the refinery. He had smelled the fumes from gas leaks many times before, so he didn't think much about it as he shut the door.

Six hours later, disaster struck. A powerful explosion ripped through the neighborhood and engulfed part of the refinery in flames, killing at least 39 people and injuring more than 80 in Venezuela's deadliest refinery blast ever.

"The first thing I saw was that the apartment didn't have windows or doors or walls, just a floor and a roof," Gonzalez said. "I don't know how we survived."

In the dark, the 31-year-old man made his way downstairs to the street, where he, his brother and sister-in-law joined terrified neighbors. Some were wounded. Others were shouting.

When Gonzalez looked at the back of his right hand, it was bleeding from gashes.

At about 2 a.m., the halls of the hospital were filling up with wounded people. Doctors and nurses hurried to treat the most seriously hurt, while Gonzalez and others sat on the floor waiting their turn.

Back at the refinery, soldiers, firefighters and state oil company workers were diving into action. Bodies were pulled from the rubble and lifted onto pickup trucks.

Stella Lugo, the governor of Falcon state, went on state television to update the nation, setting the initial toll at seven people dead and 48 injured. The toll steadily rose in the next hours.

When she reached the refinery at dawn, Lugo posted a photo on Twitter showing balls of fire and black smoke billowing.

Other government officials went on television saying the gas leak had led to the blast and that the fire was being brought under control. President Hugo Chavez ordered an investigation and declared three days of mourning in the country.

A total of 209 homes and 11 businesses were damaged in the explosion, and a National Guard post next to the refinery was destroyed, Vice President Elias Jaua said on Saturday night. He said 18 of the victims were National Guard soldiers.

On Saturday night, dozens of people who had fled their homes in the neighborhood of La Pastora returned to streets covered with rubble, twisted scraps of metal and puddles of spilled fuel.

Gabriela Nunez, a housewife, returned to her home to gather belongings, saying she was worried about looters who had stolen goods from nearby stores hours after the explosion.

"That forced us to come back, even though we're afraid, to save what can be saved and secure our houses," Nunez said.

More than a day after the blast, the flames were still raging on Sunday, sending up a thick column of smoke.

Amuay is among the world's largest refineries and is part of the Paraguana Refinery Complex, which also includes the adjacent Cardon refinery. Together, the refineries process about 900,000 barrels of crude per day and 200,000 barrels of gasoline.

Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez said the country has enough fuel in storage, "10 days of inventories," to keep the Venezuelan market fully supplied. He said fires were still burning in two fuel storage tanks but that other "process areas" of the refinery were otherwise unaffected.

Once the flames are completely extinguished, Ramirez said, "we have the ability to restart our refinery in two days."

Restarting will be a challenge for Gonzalez, who picked through what remained of his family's apartment, sweeping away debris with a broom. Broken glass littered the floor along with fragments of the shattered walls.

The shop on the first floor was also destroyed, but Gonzalez and his brother and sister-in-law all survived with only minor injuries.

"I'm happy to be here telling this story," Gonzalez said, his hand covered in a bandage and with stitches on his arms. "Material things, although they cost us a great deal to obtain, aren't worth much when you compare them with life."

Tropical Storm Isaac heads for Haiti, Dominican Republic

MIAMI (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Isaac headed toward the Dominican Republic and Haiti on Friday, continuing its march across the Caribbean after unleashing heavy rain on parts of Puerto Rico.

Isaac also posed a threat to Florida, where it could pass near the state's Gulf Coast on Monday as the Republican National Convention starts in Tampa.

Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of postponing or relocating the Republican convention if the storm takes direct aim at Tampa. But Craig Fugate, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said the convention was not his biggest concern, at least for now.

"People are spending a lot of time talking about that," Fugate said of the convention. "I wish they'd be talking about making sure people in the (Florida) Keys are getting ready and that people in southwest Florida are getting ready," he told CNN.

The storm could also affect U.S. energy interests in the Gulf of Mexico, with analysts at Weather Insight, a Thomson Reuters company, giving it a 50 percent probability of moving into the heart of the oil and gas production region.

Isaac is forecast to remain a tropical storm after crossing the Dominican Republic and Haiti and then passing over Cuba into the Florida Straits. Many forecast models show it eventually taking a track into the Gulf of Mexico, strengthening into a hurricane and possibly making landfall near Alabama, the Florida Panhandle, Louisiana or Mississippi on Tuesday.

"Isaac will likely restrengthen when it moves over the Florida Straits and the eastern Gulf of Mexico," the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

But the center warned it was "important not to focus on the exact track because of forecast uncertainties and the fact that Isaac has a large area of tropical storm force winds."

It said Isaac was centered about 115 miles south-southeast of the Dominican Republic's capital, Santo Domingo, as of early Friday morning.

The storm had top sustained winds of 45 miles per hour (75 km per hour). The Miami-based hurricane center said Isaac could become a hurricane on Friday as it nears Hispaniola, the island shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti, but weaken as it moved over land.

Isaac was expected to dump between 8 and 12 inches of rain over parts of Hispaniola, with total accumulations up to 20 inches in some areas, the NHC said, posing a significant threat to Haiti, which is highly prone to flooding and mudslides because of its near-total deforestation.

"These rains could cause life-threatening flash floods and mud slides," the center said in its Friday advisory.

Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas, still has about 350,000 people living in tents or makeshift shelters more than 2-1/2 years after a devastating earthquake that took more than a quarter of a million lives.

Red Cross workers toured crowded tent camps of Haitians left homeless by the 2010 quake to warn about Isaac. Text messages were sent out to tens of thousands of people urging them to stay away from rivers and evacuate tent camps in case the storm hits.

Authorities in the Dominican Republic began evacuating people living on the banks of rivers, streams and areas vulnerable to landslides in preparation for the approach of Isaac, whose effects were beginning to be felt with showers in the south of the country.

In the U.S. commonwealth of Puerto Rico, officials also braced for flooding after Isaac passed south of the island.

NOT ENOUGH SHELTERS IN HAITI

The NHC said Isaac was moving west-northwestward at 17 mph.

"Any slight westward versus eastward deviation makes a huge difference for Florida," said Phil Klotzbach, a research scientist who heads the respected hurricane forecast team at Colorado State University.

Some forecast models predict a final landfall in the Florida Panhandle, in the northwest corner of the state, and several showed the storm passing near Florida's Gulf Coast where Tampa is located.

Republican convention planners said they would continue to monitor the storm closely while staying in close contact with the National Weather Service, Governor Rick Scott, local emergency officials and the campaign of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

Florida has not been hit by a major hurricane since 2005 and forecasts showed Isaac was not expected to strengthen beyond a weak Category 1, with top sustained wind speeds of about 80 mph.

In Haiti, Red Cross teams, equipped with shelter and sanitation kits, deployed to distribute emergency supplies, including cooking equipment, water chlorination kits, and plastic sheeting and wood for temporary shelters, said Florent Del Pinto, Haiti head of operations for the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

Some camp residents will likely move to government-designated shelters. "But there are not enough shelters for them all," said Del Pinto, adding the shelters - schools, churches and other concrete buildings - could only handle about 50 percent of the camp residents.

In 2004, Tropical Storm Jeanne killed hundreds and flooded the port city of Gonaives with 7 feet of water in places, destroying roads and bridges and virtually cutting it off from the rest of the country.

Over the open Atlantic, Tropical Storm Joyce weakened into a depression. It was expected to regain tropical storm strength on Monday while on a path that may take it close to Bermuda.

Iran clings to Asian oil market as sanctions bite

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? When Iran welcomes leaders to a world gathering next week, few will get a grander reception than India's prime minister. As Tehran tries to offset the squeeze from Western oil sanctions, there is no greater priority than courting energy-hungry Asian markets.

The planned visit by Manmohan Singh, the first by an Indian prime minister in more than a decade, puts into sharp relief the sanctions-easing strategies by Iran ? and the political complexities for Washington that limit its pressure on Asian powers needing Tehran's oil.

Oil purchases by India, China and South Korea ? which decided this week to resume Iranian imports ? have not covered Tehran's losses after it was tossed out of the European market in July. But they have given Iran a critical cushion that brings in tens of millions of dollars in revenue a day and means that Iran has dropped only one ranking, to stand as OPEC's third-largest producer.

The U.S. has pressed hard for Iran's top customers ? China, India, Japan and South Korea ? to scale back on crude imports, with some success, offering in return exemptions from possible American penalties. But Washington cannot push its key Asian trading partners too fast or too aggressively and risk economic rifts.

"Despite Western sanctions ... China and Japan will remain major importers of Iranian crude oil and so will India," said Siddak Bakir, a Middle East and South Asian analyst for IHS Energy in London.

The ability of sanctions to wring concessions over Iran's nuclear program remains a key divide between Israel and the U.S. and its European partners.

Washington urges allowing more time for sanctions to eat into Iran's economy, which depends on oil exports for 80 percent of its foreign revenue. Some Israeli leaders have indicated a military attack is a possibility if they conclude the international community has failed to halt Iran's uranium enrichment. Iran insists it's not seeking atomic weapons and its reactors are for energy and medical use.

For Iran, however, there's a parallel fight: Trying to keep the oil flowing to its key Asian customers, possibly through deals to sell at below-market prices.

"China and India are not doing this as a favor to Iran. Quite the contrary," said Pennsylvania-based oil trader Stephen Schork. "I am sure they are extracting a very good deal out of the Iranians. ... I don't think it's fair to say Iran is unscathed. Certainly, they are under duress."

At the same time, the U.S. is applying relentless pressure on Iran's big oil markets to cut back on Iranian imports. Published and anecdotal data suggest some headway by Washington, which sweetened the offer by granting the big-four Asian buyers exemptions from possible penalties in return for curbing Iranian imports.

On Wednesday, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the exemptions would be reviewed at the end of their six-month term. "What's important to us is ... that the net flow is continuing to decrease," she told reporters in Washington.

Still, it's clear the U.S. is unwilling to risk trade wars with key Asian trading partners, even over the showdown with Iran.

"The U.S. needs Asia. It needs to maintain good relations. It also needs Asia as a critical partner in its efforts to pressure Iran through sanctions," said Sami al-Faraj, director of the Kuwait Center for Strategic Studies. "It's a delicate process of diplomacy, incentives and alternatives."

Even fast-growing China ? which counts on Iran for about 10 percent of its energy needs ? has slightly scaled back on imports from Iran: 510,000 barrels a day in the second quarter this year, compared with 560,000 in the same period last year. But some analysts say this was more over a pricing dispute than U.S. pressure.

On Tuesday, South Korea said it would resume buying Iranian oil in September after a two-month break, but at reduced levels that comply with U.S. sanctions guidelines.

Cutting Iranian crude was just too big a price for South Korea, which has nearly 3,000 companies that sold $6 billion worth of goods to Iran in 2011. Iran was also the only country that supplied oil to South Korea during the 1973 oil crisis and, in return, a major downtown street in Seoul was named after the Iranian capital, Tehran.

"South Korea does not want its ties with Tehran to irk the U.S., so it made great efforts to persuade the Obama administration to give it an exemption. Iran is probably the most important Middle Eastern country for South Korea, and it is very difficult for South Korea to sever its ties with Iran because it offers cheaper oil," said Chang Byung-ock, an Iran expert at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul.

The 27-nation EU accounted for 18 percent of Iran's exports, or about 450,000 barrels a day. Add that to the reductions in Asia ? more than half of Iran's oil exports before the EU sanctions ? and Iran has lost a significant, but not yet crippling, portion of its oil revenue.

According to the International Energy Agency, a 28-nation group that monitors global energy trends, Iran's crude oil production has fallen steadily since May to 2.9 million barrels a day in July, dropping Iran to the No. 3 spot behind resurgent Iraq.

Meanwhile, imports of Iranian oil by major consumers plunged to 1 million barrels a day in July from 1.74 million barrels a day in June, according to an Aug. 10 report from the agency, which did not give a country-by-country breakdown.

In late July ? about a month after the EU halted Iranian oil purchases ? Iran's central bank chief, Mahmoud Bahmani, called Western sanctions akin to a "military war" that requires new economic countermeasures in return. These likely will include boosting sales of petrochemical products, such as motor oil, that are not covered by sanctions, as well as expansive diplomatic efforts to secure oil markets in China and India.

The latter is set to take center stage with the Indian prime minister's appearance at the Aug. 30-31 meeting in Tehran of the Non-Aligned Movement, a Cold War relic that Iran seeks to rebuild as a counterpoint to Western influence.

India has faced a full-scale press from both sides.

In May, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton stopped in India and made repeated appeals for Iran's No. 2 oil customer to scale back on its purchases. India has curbed some of its Iranian imports ? agreeing after Clinton's visit to an 11 percent drop in the coming year. But there are limits to how far India can go as it struggles with a widening deficit and weak rupee, which drives up the costs of oil imports.

India has joined Japan in offering government-backed insurance for ships carrying Iranian crude, to bypass European sanctions that prohibit EU companies from offering coverage. The move seeks to avoid interruptions in the Iranian oil supply, with the first shipment by a government-insured tanker scheduled to arrive in India this week.

Japan was the first country to devise a workaround to the EU sanctions, passing the emergency measure in late June to avoid a disruption in critical oil supplies due to actions against Iran.

Any potential economic lifelines for Iran are likely to feed into calls by Israelis favoring a military strike on Iran. At the same time, opponents of military action have become increasingly outspoken as signs point to a war footing, such as the opening of new gas mask distribution centers in the Jewish state.

"Iran tries to present an image of having some kind of network of relationships with outside countries, and say they are not as vulnerable," said Eldad Pardo, an Iranian affairs expert at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. "But the facts on the ground show they are under a lot of pressure."

Obama dismisses criticism from US military veterans

US President Barack Obama said Monday that he was not bothered by an outspoken political attack made on him by a group of former CIA spies and US special forces troops.

The group claims to have no partisan affiliation, but last week's remarks mirrored claims by Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney's campaign that the White House leaked classified details of the raid to kill Osama bin Laden.

Obama said: "I don't take these folks too seriously. One of their members is a birther who denies I was born here, despite evidence to the contrary. You've got another who was a Tea Party candidate in a recent election."

The birther remark relates to claims from Obama foes that the US president was not born in the United States.

"This kind of stuff springs up before election time," Obama added.

In a 22-minute online video entitled "Dishonorable Disclosures," a group of former clandestine operatives alleged that the Obama administration spilled secrets of the 2011 raid in Pakistan that killed bin Laden to burnish the president's standing, without regard for the safety of US troops and agents.

The "Special Operations OPSEC Education Fund", employing the military acronym for "operational security," includes members who have been active in Republican and right-leaning Tea Party campaigns.

A former member of the Navy SEAL commandos, Scott Taylor, who ran and lost as a Republican candidate for Congress in Virginia in 2010, is identified as the group's president. Another group member identified himself as a birther.

Anil Dash of Dashes.com - Small Business Trends

We?ve come a long way baby ? in the blogosphere that is. Tune in as Anil Dash, one of the pioneers of blogging, dating back to 1999, Founder of ThinkUp and Activate and columnist for Wired magazine, joins Brent Leary to discuss the world of blogging ? then and now.

* * * * *

Anil DashSmall Business Trends: Can you tell us a little bit about your background?

Anil Dash: I am a blogger first and foremost, and I have been blogging at Dashes.com for 13 years. That has taught me a little bit about how the tech world works and about how the media world works.

Small Business Trends: Are you surprised at where we are today with blogging and social media?

Anil Dash: Yes and no. I think everything we do in terms of posting to Facebook, blogging and Tweeting, I consider that to be within the realm of what we thought blogging was going to be.

It?s actually something similar to, if you say, ?We knew hip hop was going to take over the world.? And right now, what you call pop music, even if Justin Bieber is singing it, it sounds like hip hop.

I think the same thing is true in tech. In the early days of blogging that first hundred people, that was part of that community I was part of. I absolutely took it as an article of faith that there we?re going to be a hundred million people that are going to do this, or a billion people. There was no question. Nobody had a doubt about that. I think that was part of why we seemed particularly crazy.

So the good and the bad part of being in an early community is there is a little bit of grid thinking. But in retrospect, I think it must have been like that for whoever worked on I Love Lucy.

Television had been around for 30 years before they made I Love Lucy. Then you are working on I Love Lucy, and you think, ?Man, this is the sitcom that this medium was made for; we figured it out.?

Small Business Trends: I guess it?s the same kind of cycle we are going through with all of this social technology, huh?

Anil Dash: That is exactly right. I think there were probably two or three networks that existed even before I Love Lucy launched right? I don?t know what they were doing.

It?s kind of like personal computers 20 years before the internet came along. What were we doing on them? Then we had the Internet for decades before social media comes along. What were we doing on it?

That is one of the things, where it takes a lot of time to reveal it. If you are somebody like me who makes software, makes technology, cares about those parts, what you are hoping is you are making the camera that somebody is going to shoot their I Love Lucy with.

Small Business Trends: Have consumers of the technology actually gotten ahead of the creators of technology?

Anil Dash: In some ways yes and in some ways no. At its best, yes. If you made a piece of software, or website, or app, or tool that can be used in ways you did not expect, then you are winning. Then you are really succeeding.

The examples that everybody loves to point to on Twitter are the Hashtag or the @Reply. Those weren?t invented by Twitter, those were people saying I am going to spin this turntable backwards and I am going to make something magical out of that.

Even to some degree, Twitter just announced what they are calling ?Cashtags,? which is putting the dollar sign in front of the stock ticker. It will link it to information about that company. That is something that emerged from the community

Small Business Trends: How is it different creating new Web based businesses now compared with when you helped build Six Apart?

Anil Dash: It is night and day. I remember this distinctly, late 2002, I was spending days and nights in Microsoft Excel, making spreadsheets, trying to figure out how much it should cost to have a website on the blogging service. Because nobody had ever made a service that you sign up for, and paid money for as a consumer that was a host service on the Web.

I was slaving on it for months and we were doing, what sounds silly now, calculations about how much it costs to run a server and how much it costs to pay for disk storage for your blog if you had to have a lot of pictures.

All of that is gone. Now I talk to young folks doing startups and I try to mentor them, especially here in New York City where I live. They just wave their hands kind of like, ?I don?t have to worry about that, I use Amazon EC2, or I use Rackspace, or whatever the provider is. It is all in the Cloud. I don?t even think about it.?

I know I sound like an old timer, ?Back in my day, it was up hill both ways.? But that was our liberation. Now I don?t have to know any of that stuff. I can focus on, ?Is this going to be useful to somebody?? Or, ?How do I tell the story of why this product is useful??

Small Business Trends: What recent startup has your interest today?

Anil Dash: Kickstarter is just a box of text that a person types into, so it is just a payment system. But they are using Amazon payments and didn?t really build their own payment system. There is no technology or algorithm that makes Kickstarter particularly unique or anything you couldn?t have done years ago.

What?s amazing is the culture changes. First of all, recognizing a large class of things that people want to pay for that are not about business, but instead, are all about good will and artistic expression and creativity and all of these other positive things, which is really amazing.

The second part behind it is just building the site and telling that story in a great way. Because they had to attract a film maker, a musician, somebody with a great idea for a software game, or whatever those people are. You had to be appealing to the creative types and have a place they can go and do it.

Kickstarter is for people that do creative things, I think it is astounding.

Small Business Trends: Where can people learn more about what you are doing?

Anil Dash: The best place to go is Dashes.com.

Olympics 2012: Can German athletes learn something from all that US flag-waving?

Even though Americans may get a little carried away at the Olympics, Germans could express a bit more public patriotism. Think Robert Harting, who just won gold in the discus.

By Rieke Havertz,?Contributor / August 7, 2012

The day after Gabby Douglas won the gold medal in the individual all-around gymnastics competition Fox News debated the question whether the 2012 Olympics US athletes were patriotic enough. David Webb, syndicated radio show host and spokesperson for the National Tea Party Federation complained about the lack of publicly expressed patriotism.

I don't think America has anything to worry about. Every day at the Olympics, athletes, viewers, and journalists show plenty of patriotism. Maybe Mr. Webb missed the endless athletes marveling about their country in post-win interviews, Ryan Lochte wearing a stars-and-stripes grill during his medal ceremony, or Serena Williams dancing on the court at Wimbledon.

Complex emotions

Not being an American, waving the flag at basically everything still bewilders me. And it stands in sharp contrast to my home country of Germany, where for historical reasons waving the flag still can engender deeply complex emotions.

The 2006 World Cup, hosted by Germany, changed attitudes in the country about the merits of waving the flag, something that had been considered shameful since the end of World War II. Amid the fervor of the World Cup, people started hanging flags outside their apartment windows or displaying them in their cars to show support for the German team. Lots of discussion followed about whether this was appropriate.

By the time the European Football Championship rolled around, hosted this year in Poland and Ukraine, it was no longer a big deal waving flags for the German team. Nonetheless, German athletes are still hesitant to refer to national pride and ?bringing home gold to Germany.?

More patriotism

Which is why Thomas Bach, president of the German Olympic Sports Confederation, called for more German patriotism in an interview ahead of London 2012, stating that athletes should not be ashamed of their successes. Polls back him up, showing that German society might be ready for a little more publicly displayed national pride. In a poll conducted in November 2011 by a monthly Protestant magazine, almost half of respondents, young adults between 14 and 29, said they identify as German, not European or as a global citizen.

A halfway approach may be called for. I wouldn't advocate that a German wear a black, red, and gold grill during the medal ceremony. But athletes shouldn't be ashamed of being a proud part of their nation?s Olympic team and saying so publicly. If that is expressed by female athletes wearing "patriotic" nail designs, in the end, they're just having some fashion fun rather than making a heavy political statement. Or just watch discus champion Robert Harting, who tore off his shirt in celebration of "bringing home the gold" for Germany today.

(AP) ? The family of a gunman killed in a shootout near the Texas A&M campus that also left two other people dead Monday afternoon say they are "distraught by the havoc that he has caused."

Police say Thomas Alton Caffall, 35, opened fire on Brazos County Constable Brian Bachmann just after noon as the lawman brought an eviction notice. Both men were later pronounced dead at a hospital.

A 51-year-old man was the third person killed in the shootings at an off-campus home not far from the university's football stadium, College Station Assistant Police Chief Scott McCollum said. Three other law enforcement officers and a 55-year-old woman were wounded, he said.

Officers responding to reports of an officer down saw Bachmann wounded on the ground in the front yard, then got into what McCollum described as an extended shootout with Caffall, who eventually was shot.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the families and this is just a senseless tragedy," said Courtney Clark, Caffall's sister, reached Monday evening at her mother's home in Navasota, about 20 miles to the south. "We are just distraught by the havoc that he has caused. We're shocked."

She declined additional comment.

Police spokeswoman Rhonda Seaton said Chris Northcliff was outside the home when he was shot, as was the wounded woman, whose name had not been released by Monday evening.

The woman was hospitalized in serious condition following surgery. One of the injured officers, Justin Oehlkee, was treated for a gunshot wound in the calf and was in stable condition, Seaton said. Two other officers ? Brad Smith and Phil Dorsett, were treated for "shrapnel injuries" and released, Seaton said.

Police declined to speculate on a motive for the gunfire.

The shootings prompted Texas A&M to issue an emergency alert warning students and residents to stay away from the area. Most of the university's 50,000 students were not on the campus about 90 miles northwest of Houston because the fall semester doesn't start until Aug. 27, university spokeswoman Sherylon Carroll said.

Diana Harbourt, 27, who lives about a block from where the shootings happened, said she heard five loud popping sounds from a back room of her home looking out her front door to see an officer park his vehicle on the street and crouch in front of another vehicle.

"We heard him exchanging some words with the person and then shots being fired," Harbourt said. "And then we heard more sirens and more officers and fire trucks came and they were keeping their distance, kind of slowly moving in. More officers showed up and told us to stay inside."

Officers, meanwhile, were dealing with losing someone McCollum called a respected colleague.

"Brian Bachmann was very close to everyone in law enforcement," McCollum said. "He was a pillar in this community, and it's sad and tragic that we've lost him today."

Bachmann worked more than 19 years in law enforcement, according to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education. He started out with the Hempstead Police Department before spending most of his career with the Brazos County Sheriff's Office. He had been a constable since January 2011, after winning election to the post the prior November.

In a February 2010 candidate profile in the Bryan-College Station Eagle, the married father of two said he wanted to bring "constables back to the community" by actively patrolling neighborhoods to discourage crime.

Constables are law enforcement officers similar to sheriff's deputies who are elected to serve in specific county precincts. They primarily serve warrants and official paperwork or act as courtroom bailiffs.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, an A&M alumnus, said at an event in Florida that his "prayers are with any of those that have been injured." A&M President R. Bowen Loftin issued a statement calling Monday a "sad day in the Bryan-College Station community."

A particular process results in smoker?s coughing, as well as though the phrase associates with smoking cigarettes, it can easily additionally happen in individuals who are regularly exposed to other throat, nasal and lung stimulants over a duration of many years.

Tiny fibers in the nostrils as well as the throat called cilia run by pressing irritants out of the body. When you smoke, you begin to ruin these cilia, in some cases virtually eradicating them or making them entirely nonfunctional. When you experience durations of not smoking cigarettes, like when you?re sleeping at night, your harmed cilia cannot shift the phlegm around your throat where you can easily swallow it. Smoking does lead to added mucous to create in order to get foreign toxins from your lungs.

The outcome of tobacco user?s coughing for many individuals is that they wake up in the morning with substantial phlegm in their throats. To unblock this phlegm they might have to cough regularly. Great Advice On How To Invest Your Money In The Stock Market ...

If you want to generate a substantial income, stock market investing could be a good option for you. However, unless you understand how to invest properly, the markets can also take all of your money. The following article will provide you with great advice that can help you make big returns on your stock market investments.

Attending a seminar about investing can help you get an idea of where to invest your money into different stocks. Normally you can find one for a small fee, and they are usually taught by a stock market expert who can help teach you how to get a good return on your investment.

Don?t let your emotions control your trading decisions and don?t obsess over trading decisions. If one of your stocks is dropping, do not keep focusing on it in the hopes that it will go back up. If a stock?s value is plummeting, it is not a good idea to pump more money into it, hoping that it will turn around. Use your head rather than trading on emotion.

When considering a common stock, think about what services and products you use. You can learn a lot from your intuition. When you have seen any company?s balance sheet you should then assess whether or not you want to make an investment based upon it. It not, it is probably not wise to invest in it. At least you?ll know whether or not you can accurately judge a company.

Conceptualize stocks as being parts of companies that you really do own, instead of being hazy intangibles that you can trade. Go through financial statements and other reports from the companies you invested in to get a better idea of the company?s potential. This will help you to choose your investments with care.

As noted earlier, the stock market can be a very lucrative playing field for those who know how to do it. One you become knowledgeable about what to do you may be surprised about what your earning potential is. Take advantage of all of the advice given to you.
